Susan Harkavy is a public relations consultant in New York City, specializing in contemporary design, home furnishings and lifestyle promotion, with more than twenty years' experience in the industry.
We offer public relations for designers at two levels:
Representation. Comprehensive PR representation to industry influencers and the media through personality-based programs to achieve “household name” status nationwide. Intended for designers and manufacturers of furniture, textiles, tableware, bed linens, floor- and wall coverings, lighting, accessories, craft and decorative arts.
One-Time Consultations. Low-cost guerrilla marketing strategies for young design firms with big ideas and limited budgets: a single intensive brainstorm session, three hours in length. Open to professionals in any design-related field. Participants have included -- in addition to home furnishings -- designers of jewelry, clothing, fashion accessories, graphics, interiors, packaging and consumer products as well as architects, publishers, retailers, sculptors, painters, photographers and stylists.
Our public relations programs are based on guerrilla marketing principles.
We use savvy, not big spending. We believe talented design entrepreneurs at every level, from the feisty startups to the big gorillas, can generate impressive reputations through strategic and deliberate contact with industry movers and shakers. Let us know how we may help you.
Susan Harkavy grew up in a Paul Rudolph house, which shaped her view of design and subliminally determined her career path. She focused on the Machine Age in her art history studies at Yale, interned at the Guggenheim Museum and went on to manage the press office of the Museum of Arts and Design. In the early '90s she directed inhouse publicity for Dakota Jackson before founding her own firm in 1994. Since then, she has helped thrust into the limelight such talents as Blu Dot, Christine Van Der Hurd, Ted Boerner, Annieglass, and KleinReid.
A frequent lecturer on “publicity how-to's,” she also teaches guerrilla marketing at New York Designs (a program of the City University of New York) and the Makor division of the 92nd Street Y.
